Scirpus Macranthus

Cattail, scientifically known as Scirpus macranthus, is a common wetland plant found across North America. It is easily recognizable by its long, grass-like leaves and the distinctive brown, cylindrical flower heads that resemble a cat's tail. This plant thrives in shallow water and muddy soils, often forming dense stands in marshes and along the edges of ponds. Despite its appearance, cattail plays an important ecological role by providing habitat and food for various wildlife species. Its presence also indicates the health of wetland ecosystems.
